British Citizenship Applications

British Citizenship Applications – Naturalisation Solicitors Manchester

Becoming a British citizen allows individuals to live permanently in the United Kingdom with full rights and privileges, including the ability to obtain a British passport.

Most individuals become British citizens through a process known as naturalisation after living in the United Kingdom for a number of years.

At TM Fortis Solicitors, our experienced immigration solicitors in Manchester assist clients with British citizenship applications, ensuring that applications are carefully prepared and supported by the necessary documentation.

What Is Naturalisation as a British Citizen?

Naturalisation is the legal process through which a person who is not a British citizen becomes one.

In most cases, applicants must first obtain Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or Settled Status before they can apply for British citizenship.

Once citizenship is granted, individuals can:

  • Apply for a British passport
  • Live and work in the UK without immigration restrictions
  • Participate fully in civic life in the United Kingdom

Eligibility Requirements for British Citizenship

To apply for naturalisation as a British citizen, applicants must generally demonstrate that they:

  • Are aged 18 or over
  • Are of sound mind
  • Are of good character
  • Have sufficient knowledge of the English language
  • Have passed the Life in the UK Test
  • Meet the relevant residence requirements
  • Intend to continue living in the United Kingdom

The Home Office carefully reviews applications to ensure that these requirements are satisfied.

Residence Requirements for Naturalisation

Applicants must normally demonstrate that they have lived in the United Kingdom for a specified period.

Applicants Married to a British Citizen

Individuals married to a British citizen may apply for naturalisation if they:

  • Have lived in the UK for at least three years
  • Hold Indefinite Leave to Remain or Settled Status
  • Meet the relevant residence and absence requirements

Applicants Not Married to a British Citizen

Applicants who are not married to a British citizen must normally demonstrate that they:

  • Have lived in the UK for at least five years
  • Have held Indefinite Leave to Remain or Settled Status for at least 12 months

Good Character Requirement

Applicants for British citizenship must satisfy the good character requirement.

The Home Office will consider factors such as:

  • Criminal convictions
  • Immigration history
  • Financial conduct (including unpaid taxes)
  • Compliance with UK laws

Certain criminal offences or immigration breaches may affect eligibility for naturalisation.

Legal advice may be helpful where there are concerns about the good character requirement.

English Language and Life in the UK Test

Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of the English language and life in the United Kingdom.

This requirement is usually satisfied by:

  • Passing an approved English language test, and
  • Passing the Life in the UK Test

If the Life in the UK Test was previously passed as part of an Indefinite Leave to Remain application, it does not need to be taken again.

Citizenship Ceremony

Applicants whose naturalisation application is successful will be invited to attend a Citizenship Ceremony.

During the ceremony, applicants must make either:

  • An Oath of Allegiance, or
  • An Affirmation of Allegiance

Applicants will also make a pledge of loyalty to the United Kingdom.

Following the ceremony, the individual officially becomes a British citizen and will receive a certificate of naturalisation.

Benefits of Becoming a British Citizen

British citizenship provides a number of important rights and benefits.

These include:

  • The right to apply for a British passport
  • The ability to live and work in the UK without immigration restrictions
  • The right to vote in UK elections
  • Greater freedom to travel internationally

For many individuals, citizenship represents the final step in their immigration journey.
